The mission of the DEBC is to provide for continuing quality athletic programs at the Dryden High School. Harry let me know that there was such a university program as Physical Education and directed me to the possibilities. He saw who and what I could be and opened me to that possibility. After graduating from U. of Toronto I taught High School and coached everything, including becoming involved outside the schools with East York Track Club, for 10 years. In 1971 I was invited to create a Track and Field program at U of T. and teach in the School of Physical and Health Education. I was there for 24 years, developed the most successful, and most complete program in the country that included a children's development track school, a Junior Development program for teen-agers, and a "Club" program that for a time in the '80's had five full-time world class coaches and in '88 produced 12 members of Canada's Olympic team - this all built around and integrated with the U of T Varsity men's and women's teams. I had the opportunity to coach some of Canada's finest talents and had athletes on every Olympic Team from '72 to '96. Athletes I coached won medals in every major international Games for which Canadians are eligible including David Steen Olympic bronze '88 and Michael Smith World Championship Silver '91;both in Decathlon. Upon leaving the university and the National Team situation I spent 4 years coaching performance in the business world and speaking about excellence and performance. But a great opportunity and my heart have me now as Director of a new National Coaching Institute in Toronto, and I am loving it.I have spent my life on a path that was shown to me at D.H.S. My two adult children have "migrated" even further east and both are married and living in Nova Scotia. We have raised two wonderful children (Steve - 21 years old and in his third year at Western and Jennifer -18 and ready to leave the nest). We moved back to Dryden when Rick accepted the principalship of good ol' DHS. Dryden was a great place to grow up in and I am glad my children were raised in the comfort of this great little town (excuse me - City!). Rick and I are set to go on a venture of our own this August. We are moving to Toronto for one year while he takes the position of head of the Ontario Principal's Council. And me? Well, I might take a course, I might work, and then I might just have to entertain all the friends that have promised to come and visit me in the big city. I graduated with a 4 year honors bachelor of science degree in microbiology and immunology. Wanting to further my education, I decided to do graduate school at the University of Toronto. I am doing my masters degree in advanced molecular immunology. My thesis project (in a nut shell) is looking for specific cellular targets that may cure different types of leukemia. I am hoping to one day work in the field of medicine along the side of sick children or alternatively I would like to land a managerial position in a pharmaceutical or biotech company. I did a BSc. at U of Guelph (interrupted by an 18 month tour of Europe) and then taught biology at Conestoga College in Kitchener. After eleven years "I got bored" moved back to Oxdrift, bought my dad's farm and became a pig farmer. This turned out to be not the most financially astute decision of my life! At the same time, my brother and I bought a small livestock trucking and feed business, which became Skene Transfer and Supply. In 1994, I came to my senses, quit farming and we concentrated on trucking. I was lucky enough to convince Susan Wall, a farm girl from just down the road, to marry me and life is good. It was a lot of fun working on the yearbook and helping design and build graduation decorations - I still remember that great ruddy stern wheeler we built/drew. Randy Boomhower created the moving wheel for it. By the way, I don't sing "Three German Soldiers anymore" 12 years in the Artillery Reserves got that out of my system. I've been in Kenora since 1973, doing 2 years of grade 13 - still had problems with authority. Went to U of Manitoba for 3 years in Fine Arts, when I discovered there were no employment opportunities, so I quit and became a Jail guard for 9 years. I also began to work on a B.A at Lakehead and discovered I like Sociology, so I've developed into a perrenial student of sorts. Met Joy at the jail (staff not inmate) married in 1983, honeymooned in Vancouver. Katherine was born in 1986 and is now entering Grade 9 in September. She too has several Hall genes - art ability, height (5'10") and a sense of humour. (Luckily taking after Joy in the looks and intelligence genes.) After Corrections, I moved on to the Sheriff's Office in Kenora - miss me Will? I started as Deputy Sheriff/Registrar and took over the duties of the Sheriff/ Registrar when Phil Spalton retired. This effectively cured me of my problems with authority as I became "authority", luckily I still disliked it so was less likely to abuse authority than some of my compatriates were. After 9 years of that, Mikey Harris arranged to send me money to just go away. Downsizing is the bandied about term. A week later, I was working at Zellers stocking shelves and playing with the new toys which came out at Christmas. I've since continued to "climb the food chain" employment-wise, which means getting more hours at a higher salary each time a new job was applied for. I've had the opportunities to work in a grocery store, run a lighting showroom and finally applying my education by been hired by the Kenora Association for Community Living as a Community Support Worker. It's very fulfilling work and job satisfaction is at an all-time high for me. I'll be starting as a permanent employee there on the 26th of March and am planning on doing this for the rest of my employable future. I am only in Kenora, and in Dryden often to visit family, but I never see anyone. I have lived here for 15 years, and contrary to what we grew up believing, this is a great place to live. I went to TO for three years after graduating, studying fashion design. By the time I graduated, though, I knew I was no city girl and basically tossed the career to come back. Luckily, I discovered computers and graphic design very early in the game, and have done a lot of teaching. Now, thanks to the Web, I have a great career and live where I want - especially for the canoeing, a love that was sparked on an outers trip waaayyyy back when. I earn my living mostly from writing and Web design from a home office - love it. Working conditions are perfect, and while it is hard to get away from the boss, I can at least always get my own way. Was married for 16 years, but that ended 5 years ago. I have 3 pretty terrific kids 19, 17 and 16 (that was the tough job - talk about 20 years of stress!). I've lived on Vancouver Island for 20 years and my wife Karen is a full time care-giver for special needs children. I work as a tech. rep for the golf & turf division of John Deere and still keep my hand in playing a bit of piano. My daughter Krista is 25 yrs old and working and living in Victoria. Samantha is 15, still at home and recently I have moved her into 1st place as the leading contributor to my "antique blonde" hair. Remember when your mother used to say " I hope that someday you have a son (daughter)just like you etc.......? Well my moms wish came true! I taught school there for four years, married Cecil Draper and started my life as a military spouse. Now that was a system worth bucking. Life to a serviceperson meant many months alone with a couple of small kids. It teaches a woman how to survive as a single parent even if that isn't what she signed on for. We spent seven years in Calgary where our two children Ryan(age 15) and Sarah (age 14) were born. In 1989 we moved to Shilo, Manitoba, where we lived for four years and then to Ottawa for 1 1/2 years. In 1995 Cec took his last posting at CFB Borden where he retired from the military. We are now happy civilians and are looking forward to the time when we are completely retired from the workforce. I have not been back to Dryden for many years though I do stay in touch with some of the girls that I went to highschool with. I then moved to Lake Louise, Alberta for 9 months and fell in love with the mountains. I moved back to Dryden and lived there until 1998 when I decided to move again. I chose Calgary (as close to the mountains as I could get). I moved in September of 1998, transferring from BDO Dunwoody in Dryden to BDO out here. I have now worked for the firm for 5 years and I am still (yes still) going to school to obtain my Certified General Accountants designation. I love Calgary and try to make it back home once a year to see everyone. Unfortunately this year I have planned a trip to England in August and will not be able to attend any of the reunion activities. I wish everybody the best and have one for me! I attended public school at Oxdrift Public School and high school at DHS until the completion of grade 11 in June 1974. I am the oldest of 8 children; myself, Abe, Mary Ann, Lena, Margaret, Barb, Lisa and Terry. We moved to Morden MB where I attended grade 12 at Morden Collegiate Institute. I entered the work force in the secretarial field and worked in Morden for 2 years before moving back to Dryden in 1977. I worked in the hospital office for a few months before starting employment at the Dryden Board of Education offices where I was receptionist for 3 years and then executive secretary to the Superintendent of Education for the next 6 years. I was married in 1979 and had 2 boys; John David (JD) now 16 and Christopher Grant Nikkel now 14. I moved to Calgary in 1988 and worked for Alberta Mortgage & Housing for the next 6 years. I married again in 1991 and now have a daughter, Laqueta Jolaine Schumann, who is 5 years old. After another divorce and a few more jobs, I am working for Bantrel Inc. in downtown Calgary in the Information Systems & Technology department. We make sure everyone in the company has a computer and the software they need to do their job. I'll be here 2 years in April and I love it! The boys both have part-time jobs besides their school. Chris is in Scouts and they're busy fundraising for the World Jamboree in 2001. I must extend my appreciation to Will and anyone who has been instrumental in setting up places like this for people to get in touch. It's great to reunite with old school pals. Looking forward to seeing everyone this summer! I am fortunate enough this year to be able to attend a family reunion, my niece's wedding and this class reunion all during my holidays! Left Dryden in 1972 to live in TBay,then lived in Ignace for a while before taking a deep sea diving course in California, then went to work on the oil rigs in the North Sea out of Aberdeen, Scotland from 1975 to 1980, retired diving to a safer career as a Robins Donuts franchise owner since then, and still operating a store here in the peg.
