2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Dryden Area Lutheran Parish

Our Saviour—Dryden

St Mark—Vermilion Bay

Mission Statement

To Know, Show and Grow in the Love of Christ

It is the will of our Lord Jesus Christ that His disciples should preach the Gospel to the whole world.

(Mark 16:16; Matthew 28:18-20)

To carry out His will, God has called Christians to:

                        1)  unite in worship (Hebrews 10:24,25)

                        2)  practice fellowship with one another (Acts 2:42)

                        3)  witness to all people (Matthew 28:18-20)

                        4)  help each other to grow in the Word of God (Ephesians 4:11-14)

                        5)  serve the needs of all people in Christian love (Galatians 6:10)

                        6)  administer the Office of the Keys as His Church, and exercise

Christian discipline (John 20:21-23; Matthew 18:15-20)

                        7)  maintain decency and order in the church (1 Corinthians 14:40)

Pastor’s Report 2014

I marvel at how wonderfully God has worked in our midst. 2014 was a year filled with opportunities to show the love of Christ to each other, out in our community, and beyond. There were joy filled opportunities of Baptisms and weddings as well as those times where sorrow and loss heightened our need and necessity for Christ’s love. We not only celebrated the love of Christ at special services throughout the year, but every Sunday we received grace upon grace in weekly worship as we gathered around the Word and Sacraments.

So many other events happened throughout the year where this parish took hold of opportunities to care for others, to reach out to our community, and to sow the seeds of Christ’s righteousness at work in us. We were blessed to have Pastor Brian Lee from Calvary in Thunder Bay lead our youth through a retreat called ‘Heart Graffiti: What’s written on your heart?” So many people gave of their time and sleep to make this youth event possible, and through it our youth were encouraged in their faith and acknowledged as truly important parts of the Body of Christ. Kid’s Church with all its challenges, provided a backdrop over and over again to tell the story of Jesus in the simplest way to children, most of whom are from outside our parish. Bible lessons, prayers, snacks, games, and music are the tools we have. They’re not always glitzy or high tech, but they convey the love of Christ to little ones, some of whom have never heard of what Jesus has done. Of course the year would not have been complete without a VBS visit to Galilee (a double whammy with mornings in Dryden and afternoons in Vermilion Bay), or another well attended and really exciting week of Sports Camp. Not to forget our midwinter Cabin Fever dinner and a Fish Fry, always with missions in mind.

One of my ongoing concerns for our parish is that we continue to proclaim repentance and forgiveness to the ends of the earth. We have the place (a great facility), and we have the gifts (you and me)! But lest we get too comfortable with where we are or what we have been given, the harvest fields are still white with the harvest. Christian’s don’t retire; we can be flat on our back and still pray for the work of the Christ’s church. As your pastor, I openly confess the challenge of this office is more than I can possibly do and so I depend on God’s strength through His Son and the work of the Holy Spirit. The elders’ hard work of searching for a 2nd pastor and my prayers for the well being of this parish were answered; Pastor Miller and his family arrived this July. When I first heard the news that we would be receiving a 2nd pastor, I literally cried tears of joy.

The last half of this year has been spent with Pastor Miller getting his feet firmly planted in our midst. To have a second, full time church worker in our midst puts us back to a place where our budgets and activities and reason for existing can more and more reflect the needs of God’s people and His mission in this place. It’s not that my work load has diminished greatly, but it has changed as Pastor Miller and I learn to work together so we as a parish will grow more, know more, and show more of the love of Christ. Together we will “press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:13). I am blessed to be your pastor and to be part of God’s gracious work among you.

Your servant for Jesus’ sake,

Pastor James Wood

       Pastor’s Report 2014

(Associate Pastor’s Office)

Last winter I was still writing exegetical papers for professors at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  While rushing to meet deadlines and trying hard to do homework in a way that saved God’s Word the honour due His Name; I did not yet know about paper-mills, ice hockey, or Max the Moose.  At the time, I was hidden away in a basement library somewhere behind a cubicle.  Now, twelve months later, I have six-hundred new friends (an estimate of our baptized membership role)!  If I haven’t met you, then either you have not been coming to church or you are one of the quiet ones.  Still, loud and small, we have been brought into the same close-knit fellowship of the Good Shepherd’s flock.  It is a blessing to be with you as your pastor, and my family is thankful that you receive us with such kindness.  One of the great gifts of serving your community is the benefit of these relationships!

Last July, on installation day, the responsibility set in.  You have called me to serve ‘the Office of the Holy Ministry.’  Here the duty to preach and teach God’s Word and authority to distribute God’s gifts through the Means of Grace demands serious accountability!  So, I’m still trying hard to work in a way that gives Jesus the honour due His Name.  Daily, I give thanks for my brother pastor James Wood who has been directing the ship.  It seems we’re always finding good ways of serving together to strengthen each other.  And, we continue to seek new occasions of serving apart to lengthen our reach.  So, while ‘Church worker’ remains high on the internet’s ranking of most stressful jobs, we are uncovering ways of seeing forward.  I pray the reward of serving together is benefiting your faith!

Vacation Bible School was an interesting week to arrive.  I hadn’t even unpacked my Bible when about eighty kids came rushing through the doors!  Summer Sports Camp was an exciting time as well.  What immediate opportunities to reach out with the truth of Christ’s Love.  Yes, my first impression was that Dryden Area Lutheran Parish was a very busy operation; and I have received reminders of this throughout the year.  A great first year it has been!  Challenges along the way direct us back to the cross and God continues to open our doors.  Then, let us wait patiently inside with open arms and venture happily outside with open eyes.  We have new and wonderful opportunities to know, show, and grow with two pastors around.  600 baptized members on our side may completely reform Dryden and Vermilion Bay!

One thing is troublesome.  I realize, while meeting so many new families over six month’s time, there is a wide-ranging disregard in people’s attitude toward their own spiritual life.  You and I, we are already acquainted with such needs because; “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.”  Now, it might be easy to stand from afar and critique the silly or dangerous ways fellow sinners are still trying to fill the void in their lives.  It is harder, for sure, to draw near and walk along-side of your hurting friend.  But, Jesus needs your hands and feet!  So, keep coming to church first to be fed by our Saviour!  Receive life from God’s Son!  Then, in your going… You are called to freedom.  Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for sin, but through love serve one another.  For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘Love thy neighbour as thyself.’”

                                                                                                  Your servant brother in Christ,

Pastor Miller

Chairman’s Report 2014

The past year of 2014 has seen remarkable changes in our church, answers to prayer, as well as setting us on a firm foundation for future growth and doing the work of God in our communities.

In July we were blessed with the arrival of our new Associate Pastor Miller and his lovely family.  It is interesting to reflect on the path we had taken as a congregation, in having a call for a second church worker answered.  I must admit, my faith and patience were wearing thin during this process.  It seemed that every idea or advancement we were trying only resulted in closed doors.  Was it God’s plan for us to have a second Pastor, a Director of Christian outreach, an educator, a youth Pastor or to just down size our programs to fit the work load for one Pastor?  I am so thankful that our heavenly Father is patient with us and gently reminds us, that He has the master plan for our wellbeing and growth of His Church.  God had Pastor Miller in His plan for our parish all along, we just needed to do the leg work and show faith.  God is good!

During the past year we were blessed with two new elders joining our board, Terry Ollerhead and Jack Rhyner.  We also had several new members agree to lead small groups and to serve in various extra ways in or parish.  Thank God for those who are willing to freely give of their time and maybe, step out of their comfort zone a bit, to serve God in the Church in new ways.

It is awesome to have so much activity at Our Savior on every day and night of the week.  Our Church is truly a well-known place and “hub” in the community.  Our rooms are regularly filled with dancers of all age and genre.  Karate, Judo, Weight Watchers, Alcoholics Anonymous are several of the groups who use our facilities on a regular basis.  I would be so bold to say, that the majority of those attending for these various functions are unchurched people.  We have the unique opportunity to reach out to people from our community, who already know where we are and are coming to us!  We don’t need to seek out people to share the good news of Christ with….they are already in our building!  I encourage everyone to take opportunity, to stop in at the Church during a week night, and see what is going on there.  Take time to introduce yourself to these folks, smile, shake a hand, offer a coffee, tell a joke, whatever.  Let them know that this is your church and that you are a proud and active worshipper there.  Encourage questions and direct them to any of the wonderful programs that our church provides.

I am thankful for the blessings that God continues to bestow on us each as individuals and to our Church.  I am grateful for our loving Church family and for the two dedicated and caring Pastors who serve us so unselfishly.  I pray that we will continue to grow spiritually as a Church and in doing so, realize our gifts and how we can better serve God to those around us, in our communities.

Respectfully,

Dean Benham, Chairman

Elders Report 2014

As a board of elders we are excited and blessed to have two extremely gifted spiritual leaders who regularly feed us messages of law and gospel. We look forward to growth in areas of prayer, bible study and worship. We believe we are seeing our worship experience move forward in a positive and God pleasing way.

We continue to monitor church attendance and the Spiritual well being of our members. Our secular world together with its leader (the devil) continue to distract and deceive people into believing they can live life on their own and do it themselves-no need to worry for their salvation or life after death. The art of living the good life has snuffed out their faith. Many of our friends, neighbors and family have exchanged their precious eternal life for worthless earthly things.

It is our job as Christians to tell unbelievers what the end of life will really be like without God, that they will NOT escape God’s wrath. We must be prepared to point out their incorrect ways and provide them with the comforting gospel of forgiveness that Christ offers and we have to do this with LOVE.

As God says in Exodus 20:5-6  “ I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

And from 1 John 4:19     “We love because he first loved us.”

We are blessed in this parish to have our two amazing pastors and so many wonderful parishioners who give faithfully and freely of their time and talents to forward the kingdom of God and above all we have our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as our Father. Glory be to God.

Stewardship Committee Report 2014

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace”

                                                                                                                                     1 Peter 4:10

Peter reminds us to serve. But he also, here, reminds us to use our gifts when we’re serving!

In an attempt to pinpoint and focus on the gifts of each member, this committee developed the following mandate, which was approved by the Board of Elders on November 13, 2013.

1. Assess the gifts of members using a variety of strategies.

Meetings with past and current leaders

Survey to help each of us determine our own gifts

2. Encourage members to develop an appreciation of how God blesses each one of us with a

variety of gifts that He can use for Ministry and Congregational leadership.

3. Encourage, support and care for volunteers.

4. Formulate plans for volunteer training.

5. Develop an Evaluation plan.

Surveys were distributed at Our Saviour and St. Mark churches. Although they were quite lengthy, many were completed and returned.

The committee met with each Ladies Circle, and some of the leaders of Youth Group activities. We are very thankful for the many ideas given to us during these meetings, and will include them in our plan for the upcoming year.

It became clear, that some volunteers felt pressured and sometimes abandoned in their volunteer positions. We felt strongly that we needed to acknowledge and show appreciation for the work they were doing. We sent Thank you cards to individuals and groups recognizing their work.

We hoped that the self-assessment survey would help each of us identify our gifts, and realize that, although we may, at time, pitch in and help where help is needed, the majority of our volunteering should be in our gift areas, as that is where we’ll be most effective.

We will continue the work outlined in our mandate, and sincerely thank you for your support of this work.

Let us serve one another, uplift one another in prayer, and give thanks for each individual as we offer our gifts in His service.

In Christ’s Service,

Judi Benham, Freda Cheslock, Kristina Richter

St. Mark Mavens 2014 Annual Report

The 2014 year was a very productive one for the St. Mark Mavens.  We welcomed three new Summer Time helpers which certainly put us over the top!

We hosted another “Tie One On” where eleven women tied eighteen ‘Comfortts’.  A delicious lunch prepared by Mary Loewen restored our energy and was a wonderful opportunity to visit.

Over the course of 2014 we had three Dedications where St. Mark Church was festooned with Comforts.  Seven Comforts were distributed to Community Members, thirteen to Helping Hands Thinking of You (a Vermilion Bay Christmas Cheer) thirty to Palliative Care and one hundred and thirty eight to Lutheran World Relief.  This has been the most comforts we have made in one year – totaling one hundred and eighty-eight.  Our GRAND total since inception is seven hundred and ninety-six!!

Thank yous to everyone who has donated material, crochet cotton and financial support to our efforts.

January 1, 2014 Opening Bank Balance  $173.92

Purchases of Batting/Supplies                    660.00

KIDS’ CHURCH SUMMARY REPORT FOR 2014

We get anywhere between 20-30 kids per week. We start out with a memory verse while we are waiting for everyone to arrive. I would have the memory verse written on a poster and the kids would read it out loud then sign their name on it. Then they would have a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables, cheese and crackers and something sweet like cake or cookies and juice in the fellowship hall. Then pastor would keep the older ones for prayer, offering and bible study. I would take the 4-6 year olds in a different room and do a prayer and offering and a bible story with them. Then we would join the other kids back in the fellowship hall for crafts and songs before going home.

We had many events in the last year. We had a sliding day where the kids had a snack and hot chocolate to warm up with. At our Easter fair we got to go on a parade with a sheep, a donkey and a bunny. The kids loved that, and then we had a pot luck supper after. Then in May we had our kids’ church barbeque and wind-up. Paige Ponton was a great help with some games and there was face painting too. Then in September we started out again. The kids did a Christmas pageant in December and a dinner to follow.

The Kids’ Church account has an opening balance in January of $1315.70 and a closing balance in December of $1131.22.

Respectfully submitted,

Barb Singleton
